Episode 2 - Frayed pt 1

Doctor - First

Companions - Susan

Location - The Planet Iwa

Timeframe

Events happen over the course of a few hours at the most. The Doctor and Susan leave the TARDIS, they are chased by the wolves and separated. The Doctor is found by the Humans and is put through the decontamination procedures. No comments made as to time.

Past Adventures

There are no references made to past adventures but there is a note that his journeys had just begun.

Notes

The uniform of a Doctor is given to the Time Lord and this appears to form the origin of the name.

Review

This is actually the first time I have read Frayed so I have resisted reading summaries of this. It is all rather straightforward  build up so far. The Wolves and characters seem interesting enough even if the scenes with the girl staring at the sun are all a little cryptic.

Total Time - Couple of hours

Ep 1 - The Exiles

Doctor  - First

Companions - Susan

Time frame

How long exactly passes is unclear although I would say less than 1 day. They spend a couple of hours working out the controls but have come straight into the TARDIS from an unrecorded adventure. The Doctor falls asleep and Susan ventures alone into the TARDIS. Susan specifically says that she is unsure how long passes in the wardrobe.

Past Adventures

The Doctor is stated to have been an Ambassador for the Time Lords who traveled in a TARDIS which was piloted by technicians. He is stated to have visited many worlds and many times. Not made clear how long he worked in this role.

It is not made clear what Susan sees in the mirror the Doctor suggests that this is an echo from Gallifreys past it could equally be the echo of some future event.

Notes

The Doctor is never named and is referred to as Grandfather throughout the story. Although reference is made to Susan she is not explicitly named as this by the Doctor in the dialogue.

Review

As openings go I was impressed but what is going on is kept deliberately vague and there is little chance that we will ever find out what is actually seen in the mirror or who it is in fact waiting for. I am actually looking forward to this more having read this short story.

Summary

Approximately 1 day.

Season 1

The series will vary considerably in length and the first couple are quite short. I will then have a break between each series.

Season 1 are the stories of the Doctor and Susan traveling alone together before arriving on Earth 1963. I have tried to arrange them in an order reflecting their familiarity with Humanity but having read them in the order that they are published as Short Trips I have just done this from memory without having re-read them in this order before.

Season 1 - Wanderers in the Fourth Dimension

  • The Exciles - Short - Short Tips 6 - 1 episode
  • Frayed - Novella - Telos 11 - 7 episodes
  • All Consuming Fire (Flashback) - Novel - New Adventure 27 - 1 episode
  • Indian Summer - Short - Short Trips 24 - 1 episode
  • The Price of Conviction - Short - Short Trips 27 - 1 episode
  • Bid-A-Wee - Short - Short Trips 9 - 1 episode
  • The Gift - Short - Short Trips 18 - 1 episode
  • Childhood Living - Short Trips 20 - 1 episode
  • Life from Lifelessness - Short Trips 23 - 1 episode
There is disagreement on some of the websites that I have seen but I have decided to treat The Innocents from Short Trips 14 as being an Unbound story and not a story from the 1st Doctor. I have also excluded The Longest Story in the World as this does not seem to me to be intended as part of the Doctor Who time line. I haven't included the flashbacks in Lungbarrow, Master, etc as I wanted to begin just as the Doctor left Gallifrey.

Introduction

I have been thinking about doing this for a while but have never gotten around to it, so with a week off work I thought I would finally set this up.

There are a lot of websites out there that list Doctor Who stories including a few which have attempted to list the various media together to form a coherent time line but I have always wondered how much subjective time is supposed to pass for the Doctor and the various companions. This is difficult to estimate as some 6 part episodes take place over a couple of hours whereas some short stories take place over months. So I decided to make my own.

Stories Included

First of all I take no view over what is or isn't Doctor Who Cannon but I did need to set some rules over what I would be including in this project for the sake of sanity and availability of material. The main effect of this is that I have decided to exclude all of the comics. This isn't a comment on quality but this project is already unmanageable as it is and I didn't want to add to this. I have also excluded most stories not featuring the Doctor for now although I may come back to these depending on whether I get through these first. So the material that made it into the final cut is:

  • The Television Series
  • The Virgin New and Missing Adventures
  • The BBC Eighth and Past Doctor Adventures
  • The New Series Adventures, Novels, Audio and Quick Reads
  • The Big Finish Main Audio Range
  • The Big Finish Eighth Doctor  Range
  • The Companion Chronicles
  • Various Big Finish Specials, Magazine, Web, etc
  • Short Story Anthologies, Decalog, Short Trips and Storybooks (but not annuals or year books)
  • BBC Audio
  • A Couple of Exceptions to this rule including Who Killed Kennedy and Campaign
How this is worked out

I have broken these down into episodes of approximately 25 minutes with each episode warranting an entry on the blog and have placed these into my own seasons. This does not exactly mirror any other website listing out there but is a combination of all of them plus my own tinkering with them. These are broken down into 151 series and 6126 episodes (but this will change as I will continue adding new material to this list).

Each of the original episodes is maintained as one. New series episodes and Big Finish episodes are kept as one unless they run over 40 minutes in length at which point I have broken them down.

Each short story has been kept as one even though they vary in length considerably. The novels have been taken very roughly by word count and then broken down into 20 minute blocks at 350 words per minute.

At the beginning of each series I will list the episodes so that anyone wanting to join in will be able to follow along or read ahead. I am hoping that a lot of people will get involved as well and help point out the errors or omissions which will obviously creep in.
